WARNING: If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

This standard warning is on the box and tube of all conventional toothpastes, which makes toothpaste one of the most common poisons in our households. Considering this warning, it made me realize that there are a lot of products out there that are intended for our benefit but also come with some degree of risk.

Natural Dental Care Products

When it comes to at-home dental care products, there are a lot of alternatives to choose from. Whether it’s more natural products, more environmentally friendly materials or more ethically responsible companies; there are products that allow you to maintain good oral health without compromising your values.
The best thing you can do is be an informed consumer when it comes to your health. Read labels, ask questions and consider alternative products for the prevention of disease and the maintenance of your health.

Over the next four weeks, I will be giving away a variety of natural dental care products to four (4) lucky winners. Each week, I will post a helpful dental tip along with the giveaway for these natural dental care products. To enter, participants must follow the steps on our Facebook page. The weekly giveaways are open to patients of Dr. Dexter and local Eugene/Springfield residents. This Natural Dental Care Product giveaway series will continue until Monday, September 12th.

Week 1

From August 22nd – August 28th, 2016
Read the labels and try to avoid toothpastes that include ‘triclosan’ and ‘sodium lauryl sulfates’. With other ingredients; Ask yourself, ‘Would I eat this?’ Given the toxic level of fluoride and chemical additives in toothpaste, the answer is a resounding NO.

Week 2

From August 29th – September 4th, 2016

Small as they are, 50 million pounds of toothbrushes are tossed into America’s landfills each year. Consider some of the green alternatives. A tongue cleaner will fight bad breath, caused by debris that builds up on the back part of your tongue.

Week 3

From September 5th – September 11th, 2016

Choose floss coated with natural waxes or no wax and look for products with minimal or recyclable packaging. Avoid floss coated with petroleum derived products (nylon) and highly toxic PTFE-Teflon, a carcinogen.

Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay.

Week 4

From September 12th – September 19th, 2016

Many conventional mouthwashes contain ingredients that you wouldn’t want to swallow, or even put down the drain.

Avoid the ones with fluoride or toxic ingredients like quanternium-15 (aka formaldehyde). Other problematic ingredients include sodium lauryl sulfate, polysorbate, cetylpyridinium chloride and benzalkonium chloride, all which have been shown to be toxic to organisms in the aquatic environments where these chemicals end up after we spit them out.

Consider using alternative mouthwashes that contain less harmful additives and are more environmentally friendly.

The Promotion begins at 6:00 PM PDT on Monday, August 22nd, 2016 and ends at 11:59 PM PDT on Monday, September 19th, 2016 (“Promotion Period”). This promotion is not sponsored, endorsed, or administered by Facebook or any dental care brands.

Four winners will each receive a variety of dental care products. Within 48 hours of completion of the giveaway series, winners will be randomly selected. Winners will be contacted on Facebook and announced on Wednesday, September 21st, 2016.
