Interview with Sweet Life Patisserie & Giving back to Sponsors, Inc.

I have partnered with Sweet Life Patisserie for this month’s Giveback Giveaway. Sweet Life is one of Eugene’s food institutions and some would even say it is THE food institution of our community.

Since 1999 they have been serving up delectable desserts from their Monroe Street bakery while also being an active supporter of our community. I personally love their caramel bread pudding, but on any given day they offer a vast selection of irresistible and inclusive treats (they always have vegan and gluten-free options). For the past 15+ years I have received innumerable cakes from Sweet Life while also giving gift cards and cakes to patients, staff, friends and family for them to experience the joy of Sweet Life Patisserie.

Co-owners, and sisters, Cheryl & Catherine Reinhart have built a strong connection to our community through their local bakery and their continued efforts to partner with and support a number of local organizations and charities.

One such organization that they have been involved with is Sponsors, Inc. A local organization that helps men and women with reentry into our community following release from incarceration. Together with Sweet Life Patisserie, I have chosen to personally donate $1 to Sponsors, Inc. for each entry to our giveaway. Support for Sponsors, Inc. helps build a stronger, safer community here in Lane County.

Since 1973 Sponsors, Inc. has served our community through their efforts to assist those released from incarceration find shelter and employment while also assisting them with social readjustment. Every year, Sponsors, Inc. helps over 500 people reenter our community to become productive, law-abiding, hardworking and tax-paying citizens. Learn more about their organization here.

Please help us to support Sponsors, Inc. by entering to win one of four (4) $25 gift cards to Sweet Life Patisserie!

I’m pleased to have Sweet Life Patisserie co-owner Cheryl Reinhart join us for a brief interview.

1. How was Sweet Life Patisserie started?

My sister Catherine and I started it as a home business because we love baking! We converted our one car garage into a certified kitchen and began making cakes for any customers who found us, going to bridal shows, and doing custom wedding cake orders.

2. What is your baking philosophy?

We bake almost 100% of our products from scratch. In this way, we can choose high-quality ingredients and make our desserts the way we like them to taste. We tend to make things that are not too sweet, and if they have chocolate they have a lot of it! We use non-GMO ingredients and some organic ingredients. We also buy as many locally sourced ingredients as we can.

3. I appreciate, and really enjoy, the broad selection of egg, dairy and gluten-free options at Sweet Life Patisserie. How have these more inclusive options evolved over the years and what prompted you to offer these items?

When we started our business, we knew a lot of people who were vegan. From the very beginning, there has been plenty of demand for our egg-and dairy-free desserts. We also started making egg-and dairy-free breakfast pastries when we opened our retail store in 1999. As our regular dessert menu has expanded, the variety of vegan desserts has also expanded.

4. What are a few of your favorite treats from the bakery?

I love eclairs and our blood orange cheesecake.

5. What’s next for Sweet Life Patisserie? I was excited to hear the news that you are opening a second location, can you tell us a bit more about that?

We are opening a second location on 19th near Agate. The space is small, so it will be retail only with no inside seating and no production space. We are busy expanding our production space at our current facility to accommodate our increased needs. We plan to open near the end of the April. We are very excited about it!
